Spring Libya Tour

What's it all about?

This tour invites you to explore the treasures of this North African gem, where ancient civilizations and modern influences converge.

Libya has been mired in civil strife since the fall of Gaddafi in 2011. Recently, however, the country is experiencing relative stability and with the introduction of a tourist visa on arrival, it’s never been easier to join one of our Libya tours.

Libya has the potential to become one of Africa’s and the Sahara’s great travel
destinations. It possesses some of the best-preserved ancient Roman ruins, picturesque oases, lost Saharan cities and the largest sand dunes in the world.

From the bustling markets of Tripoli, and the timeless ruins of Leptis Magna to the serene oases of Ghadames, each day promises a new adventure.

Join us as we unveil the secrets of Libya, a land where the echoes of ancient civilizations resonate in the wind and the warm hospitality of its people invites you to become part of its rich narrative.

We’re also running an Algeria tour directly following this trip and a Mauritania tour before. Spaces are limited so enquire today!

The Itinerary

March 30th | Day 1 - Tripoli

  • Morning arrival into Tripoli. Airport transfer to our central city hotel.
  • Tripoli city tour – Visit the 19th-century Ottoman Clock Tower.
  • Explore the bustling souks of the old Medina.
  • See the Arch of Marcus Aurelius – built in 163 AD, the triumphal arch of Marcus Aurelius is Tripoli’s most iconic monument. It was the centre point of the old Roman city.
  • Visit Martyrs’ Square – formally known as Independence Square under Colonel Gaddafi. It’s the centre of the newer Italian-built area of the city.

March 31st | Day 2 - Jabel Nafusa / Ghadames

  • After breakfast, we drive 70 km south of Tripoli to the rocky mountains of Jebel Nafusa. The mountain rises abruptly from the desert plain of Jefara to a height of over 750 meters. The mountains are awe-inspiring. Jebal Nafusa is the heartland of the Berber people of Libya.
  • Visit the magnificent 12th-century fortified granary of Qasr al-Haj.
  • Continue further south into the Sahara until we arrive at Ghadames, one of the oldest towns in the Libyan Desert.
  • Dinner and overnight in Ghadames

April 1st | Day 3 - Ghadames

  • Full day exploring Ghadames.
  • This was an important stopping-off point in the trans-Saharan caravan routes between
Timbuktu and the Mediterranean coastal cities of Libya.
  • Old Ghadames was surrounded by a semi-circular wall accessed by several gates that were closed each day at sunset. Buildings are constructed of sunbaked clay bricks, clustered around seven main streets.
  • The Old Town, though now deserted, is still very atmospheric with this unique style of Saharan
architecture. During our walking tour, we hope to visit a traditional house and several interesting
mosques. Later in the day, it is usually possible to take an excursion into the steep dunes close to
Ghadames to enjoy a sunset over the mountains of Algeria and enjoy some green tea and
    traditional Mella bread.
  • Overnight in Dar Ghadames Hotel.

April 2nd | Day 4 - Gharyan

  • Leaving the Sahara behind, we begin the journey back towards Tripoli.
  • Our main stop will be in Kabaw for lunch and then drive further to Gharyan City 50 miles south of Tripoli.
  • Gharyan was on the trade routes both south to Fezzan and over the Nafusa Mountains. By 1884 the Ottomans had established a mayor and town council here.
  • It was considered the centre of Libyan resistance against the Italian invasion early in the 20th century.
  • Drive to Tripoli
  • Dinner and overnight in Tripoli.

April 3rd | Day 5 - Leptis Magna

  • Today we will visit Leptis Magna, one of the greatest ancient sites in the world. In its heyday during the reign of Libyan Emperor Septimius Severus, it was second only to Rome and housed over 100,000 people. This vast city remained buried for some 1300 years, and it was not until the 1920s that a major excavation by Italian and Libyan archaeologists revealed the limestone and marble wonders that we explore today.
  • Lunch nearby.
  • After extensively exploring the site, we return to Tripoli.
  • Walk along the newly opened Tripoli corniche!
  • Dinner, shisha and overnight in Tripoli.

April 4th | Day 6 - Sabratha

  • Early drive northwest to Sabratha – one of the most important historical sites in Libya. The city dates back to 500 BC and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Phoenicians and Romans previously used it as a seaport.
  • Visit the Sabratha Theatre – dating back to 175CE. Explore the amphitheatre where duals took place in front of a crowd of up to 10,000 spectators.
  • Drive back to Tripoli
  • Explore more of Tripoli’s old town and visit sights we might have previously missed.
  • Dinner overlooking the port and overnight in Tripoli.

April 5th | Day 7 - Departure

  • Transfer to the airport
  • End of Libya tour – Join us directly after this tour for a very special Algeria Tour!
