Is Baghdad Safe To Visit Now?
(True as of 2021)
The Iraqi capital of Baghdad has been through a lot over the last 30 years. It has, for much of this time, been known as a no-go city and one of the most dangerous in the world. What’s it like today? Is Baghdad safe to visit now?
For the first time in a very long time, Baghdad can now be considered safe to visit. Since the fall of ISIS in northern and western Iraq in 2016, the Iraqi security forces have continued to quash any remaining ISIS presence in these regions. There are now numerous checkpoints outside the city of Baghdad, which create an almost impenetrable border into the city. This all but prevents any unwanted visitors from entering Baghdad.
It should be noted, however, that some incidents have occurred in recent years — but nothing like the numerous tragedies which were common from 2003-2015. The city sees some random and sporadic attacks every 6 months or so, but on the whole, is safe to visit now.
