New Iraqi e-Visa
Iraq's new visa policy
On 1 March 2025, Iraq revised its visa policy, moving from visa on arrival to a more streamlined
electronic visa (e-Visa) system for citizens of certain countries. The change is intended to make entry
procedures more efficient, reduce queues at entry points and strengthen controls on foreign entries.
Who is affected by the new changes?
Prevoully there was a lengthy e-Visa process for most countries, however the new e-Visa system applies to nationals of the following countries:
– US
– UK
– EU
– Russia
– China
– Australia
– Canada
– South Korea
– Japan
– Switzerland
– New Zealand
Travellers from these countries must now obtain an eVisa before arriving in Iraq, as the previous option of a visa on arrival has been scrapped.
Steps to apply for the Iraqi eVisa:
1. Access the official eVisa portal: Using a secure and updated web browser to access the site.
2. Create an account: If you are a first-time user, you’ll need to register by providing a valid
email address and creating a password. An activation link will be sent to your email; click on
it to activate your account.
3. Complete the application form: Log in to your account and fill out the e-visa application
form. You’ll be required to provide:
– Personal information: Full name, date of birth, nationality, and gender.
– Passport details: Passport number, issuance date, and expiration date. Ensure your
passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of entry.
– Travel information: Purpose of visit (e.g. business), intended date of arrival, and
duration of stay.
– Contact information: Residential address, phone number, and email address.
4. Upload Required Documents: Prepare digital copies of the following documents for upload:
– Passport bio-data page: A clear, coloured scan of the page containing your photograph and personal details.
– Recent passport-sized photograph: Ensure the photo meets standard passport requirements (clear, coloured, white background).
5. Obtain Iraqi health insurance: As of February 2025, all foreign nationals applying for an Iraqi visa are required to have Iraqi health insurance. This can be obtained through the Electronic Insurance platform integrated within the e-visa application system. During the application process, you’ll be prompted to select and pay for the appropriate insurance coverage.
6. Pay the visa and insurance fees: After completing the application and selecting your insurance plan, you’ll proceed to the payment section. The system will calculate the total amount, encompassing both the visa activation fee and the health insurance premium. Payments are typically made using a valid credit or debit card.
7. Receive the eVisa Approval: Processing times may vary, but applicants generally receive an
approval notification via email within a few business days. Upon approval, a digital visa document will be attached. Print a hard copy of this e-visa approval to present upon arrival in Iraq.
Arrival in Iraq: What to expect
Upon arrival at entry points such as Baghdad International Airport, ensure you have the following
documents readily available:
– Printed eVisa Approval: This serves as your official entry permit.
– Passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry.
– Printed Health Insurance Policy: Even though you’ve purchased Iraqi health insurance
online, immigration authorities require a physical copy of the policy.
Immigration officials will verify these documents. With the new electronic system, visa stickers are
now printed electronically, replacing the previous handwritten versions, which expedites the entry
process.
Important considerations
– Advance planning: Apply for your e-visa well in advance of your intended travel date to
accommodate potential processing delays.
– Accurate information: Ensure all details provided in the application are accurate and match your supporting documents. Discrepancies can lead to delays or denial of entry.
