Just what are the North Korean Mass Games?

Quite simply the largest human group performance on earth.

This year’s show entitled “Land of the People” will feature up to 100,000 performers for 90 minutes in the world’s largest stadium – the Mayday Stadium. The gigantic backdrop features  a giant mosaic of individual students each holding a picture book whose pages links with their neighbours’ to make up one epic scene after another.

Land of the People

After a 5 year hiatus North Korea has recently re-started its famed mass games performances. The world record holding Airirang Mass Games lasted from 2002 until 2013. The games returned in 2018 with “Glorious Fatherland” and this year’s are bigger and more stunning than ever.

North Korea has a long history of hosting mass performances stretching all the way back to 1946. That’s over 70 years of perfecting the art. The 2019 version chronicles the history of the DPRK from Liberation over the Japanese to current achievements in science and engineering.

If you plan to visit North Korea from July to October, then you will have the opportunity to witness this spectacle yourself. See a full list of our North Korea Tours here!
