Fascinating Facts About Socotra

Did you know Socotra is referred to as the ‘Galápagos of the Indian Ocean’ due to its unique biodiversity? This remote island is a mysterious place with plenty of cultural quirks.

From its famous dragon’s blood trees, shaped like umbrellas, to its ‘bottle trees’ with their swollen trunks topped with delicate pink flowers, you might feel like you’ve entered a sci-fi movie!

An Unspoilt Haven

The island boasts an incredible 700 plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world. From unique reptiles to rare birds, it’s a real haven if you’re a wildlife lover. It’s also known for its captivating beaches and caves, making it something of an untouched paradise.

Socotra’s remoteness has helped it remain largely unspoiled by modern tourism. The locals, known as Soqotri, are incredibly welcoming and still speak Soqotri, an ancient Semitic language that’s unique to the island. You will discover traditions and a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site
