Step Into Historic Afghanistan With Our Travel Tours
Afghanistan has a rich and complex history that spans thousands of years. Its story dates back to ancient times when it was part of various empires, including the Achaemenid Persian Empire and the Maurya Empire.
The region was also famously the crossroads for trade and cultural exchanges along the Silk Road. Our group and private tours enable you to discover both the story of Afghanistan and its modern culture.
Travel to Afghanistan and discover a country with a unique history.
In the 13th century, Genghis Khan and his Mongol forces invaded Afghanistan, wreaking havoc and causing a significant loss of life. Later on, the country enjoyed a period of relative stability and creative development during the Timurid Empire.
In the 16th century, parts of Afghanistan came under the rule of the Mughal Empire of India. During this time, Kabul, which features in our travel tours, was an important regional centre.
The 18th century saw the rise of the Pashtun Empires, leading to the establishment of the modern state of Afghanistan.
In the following century, Britain sought control of the country and it became a battleground for British and Russian imperial interests. The mid-20th century witnessed political instability, coups, and shifts in power within Afghanistan, including an invasion by the Soviet Union.
The late 20th century was marked by a brutal civil war, the rise of the Taliban, and the establishment of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in 1996. After 9/11, international forces led by the USA invaded the country to get rid of the Taliban regime.
Rocky Road Travel currently has two tours coming up in autumn 2023 and spring 2024.
